Collected conbadges #20 by Brian Reynolds

Here's another collection of conbadges. Now that I'm all caught up on older badges these and future images will represent badges done at a specific convention -these are from Anthrocon 2008. Interesting notes on these: "Blaine" had a terrific piece of reference art drawn in a house-animation-style and that was a great change of pace from the usual style I employ. "Ecco" was a neat opportunity for me to think back on the various girls I've known who had a propensity for wearing pseudo hippie 1960's attire. Dig those tinted glasses! Lastly is "Dusty Waber" who had the terrific idea of getting a badge along with his friends all in the Buddy Christ pose. I knew enough about Buddy Christ to do the drawing but I wanted to double check on the accuracy of the image and so I enlisted some photographic help in getting the post right... here's my reference image... :) http://www.flickr.com/photos/brian_reynolds/2626684264/

Here's another collection of conbadges. Now that I'm all caught up on older badges these and future images will represent badges done at a specific convention -these are from Anthrocon 2008. Some interesting notes here: Mary is an terrificly fun character to draw and I particularly enjoyed playing up the dramatic gusts of wind she routinely finds herself amidst. MehndiX was a great piece to do as well since I had previously done a badge for her husband SimbaX and the challenge was on to see if I could make a badge that would bookend the first badge. Finally John Brabson provided such a memorable appearance and attitude when describing what he wanted on the badge that I don't see his character so much as I see him in the drawing.

Yurex Kangaroo hopping by Brian Reynolds

Convention sketch drawn at Anthrocon 2008. I've heard the locomotion of kangaroos at full tilt being described as a "ricochet" rather than a hop, and so naturally every time I think about high speed kangaroos I hear in the back of my mind the cliche ricochet sound effect you heard in almost every old television gunfight.

Convention sketch drawn at Anthrocon 2008. Lanny is another fellow whom I've had the pleasure of drawing for on several occasions; a pleasure which also carries with it some difficulty in making sure that I don't deliver something shoddy after having previously providing good work. This is a scene that he helpfully provided a description for to make up for my relative unfamiliarity with the formalities of the oriental tea ceremony and I think the end result reflects well on the intent. My one token "gag" was in paying proper observance to the manner in which canines drink. :)

Convention sketch drawn at Anthrocon 2008. "Iskunk" had a design for a race of creatures that were a hybrid of a couple animal breeds and he wanted to see a rendition that would place emphasis on the squat, powerful baseline the design was aimed at.

I'd be careful about shaking his hand if I were you. I'll bet that a costume made of this guy would be *AWESOME* to watch in action tho... >:D

Convention sketch drawn at Anthrocon 2008. I was a bit on a kick with the Buddy Christ pose and without thinking I found myself using a variant on that gesture a second time in this drawing. This is the second time I've been asked to draw a spotted-skunk design and I have to say that the natural patterns for that breed are just plain odd.

Convention sketch drawn at Anthrocon 2008. One thing I'm trying to keep in mind when drawing pictures of characters that are based on a costume is the potential for prop suggestions that the costume can eventually make use of, so here we've got a beach ball and food dish. Of course since only 1% of all the costumes out there actually speak I sometimes have to wonder whether the characters being portrayed actually have the mindset of the original animal or a human personality.

This is the second time I've done an art trade with David Cantero, who has got quite a knack for drawing attractive girls, and yet although I've tried to draw something appealing for him he's chosen to not draw those attractive girls in my book. Convention sketch drawn at Anthrocon 2008. Derrick has a sketchbook themed to snowboarding and other winter sport activities and I've had the pleasure of contributing several pictures to the book... but partially due to the fact that not too many other people have similar themes I find that most of the best gags I can readily think up under convention timelines are those which I've already illustrated for his book. !! This isn't a great gag but it does draw from my own experience and difficulty in avoiding severe injury while trying to snowboard.

Convention sketch drawn at Anthrocon 2008. The theme for this sketchbook was "Squirrels are good for..." If any of you have followed my wife's livejournal you'll know the kind of activity we regularly endure from the local squirrel population, which is on ample display here. On recollection however I know that the squirrels 'round here also have a strong tendency to throw themselves at the mercy of automobiles, which isn't the wisest course of action you could choose...

Given how interesting and different coati's are I'm surprised I haven't seen more characters using this animal as a jumping off point. This was an absolute last minute piece done before the convention closed and I was really afraid I couldn't come up with a good idea to draw... but fortunately Royce had his signature hat present and that was all I needed to get an idea I could run with.

Oh how I wish I could share all the permutations of the flipside sketchbook page gag that fill Tim's book. All I can offer here is that by the time I drew this there were so many amazingly funny gags already done that I had to stop and ponder what I could do that hadn't already been done...
